Hualien, Taiwan – October 2, 2025

When Matai’an Creek overflowed on September 23, causing devastating floods in Guangfu Township, Hualien County, local residents faced severe damage to homes, roads, and property. Yesterday, volunteers—including a group of Filipino interns—stepped in to aid recovery efforts.

Dubbed the “Shovel Supermen” by local media, these everyday heroes sacrificed their Teachers’ Day weekend to help clear mud and debris. Among them were participants from the Filipino Young Farmer Internship Program in Taiwan (FYFIPT), who worked alongside Taiwanese volunteers.

Equipped with shovels, boots, hats, brooms, and cleaning supplies, the volunteers helped families salvage belongings, clear roadways, and restore affected areas. Their efforts highlighted the bayanihan spirit, demonstrating solidarity and compassion across communities.

Community leaders and residents expressed gratitude for the assistance, noting the remarkable dedication of both local and international volunteers. The FYFIPT interns’ contribution underscores the strong ties between the Filipino community and Taiwan, even in times of crisis.

Mabuhay to the FYFIPT interns for their commitment and compassion, exemplifying the best of the Filipino spirit abroad.
