Manila (October 2, 2025)— Taiwan on Wednesday expressed condolences and pledged humanitarian support after a powerful earthquake struck the central Philippines, leaving dozens dead and many others injured.

The 6.9-magnitude quake rattled Cebu Island late Tuesday, killing at least 69 people and injuring 147, according to updated figures from authorities. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that at least 22 structures collapsed or sustained major damage due to the tremor.

Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Assistant Secretary Rafael Alejandro IV said the majority of fatalities were concentrated in areas near the epicenter. Bogo City, where the quake originated, recorded 30 deaths, followed by San Remigio with 22, Medellin with 10, Tabogon with five, and one each in Sogod and Tabuelan.

“That’s the number that we have as reported to us as of noontime, which is again for validation and verification,” Alejandro said.

The situation remains fluid as search and rescue operations continue, with more casualties expected to be confirmed in the coming hours.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) confirmed that no Taiwanese nationals have been reported harmed or trapped by the quake. In a statement, MOFA conveyed deep sympathy to the victims and their families and affirmed Taiwan’s readiness to provide humanitarian aid to the Philippines.

The ministry added that its representative office in Manila is closely monitoring developments. Taiwanese citizens in affected areas may seek assistance via the 24-hour emergency hotline at (+63) 917-819-4597.
